MECHANICAL ADJUSTMENTS

Basic positioning of the cutting head

The included CH9 cutting head is factory calibrated. Other user-supplied cutting heads can also be mounted upon request. The mounting box can be mounted variably for this purpose.

Fine positioning of the cutting head

  • The device features a cross laser that can be switched on and off via the touchscreen display. This indicates the exact contact point.
  • The Y-Z axis adjustment adapter allows the precise position of the contact point to be adjusted using micrometer screws.
  • A pointer on the suspension box indicates the exact target position for the cutting angle.
  • The contact force (cutting depth) can be adjusted using the adjustment wheel on top of the suspension box.

Lowering and raising the cutting head

The cutting head can be lowered mechanically using a lever. Raising can be done manually using the release button or electrically. The electrical release works via the keypad (abort) or automatically (at the end of the cut or in the event of an operating error).

Cross Laser

The cross laser is factory calibrated but can be easily adjusted.

Manual plate speed control

This allows the platen speed to be adjusted by +/-8%, +/-16%, or +/-50% (depending on the preset setting on the touchscreen display).

CONTROL PANEL

START Button

  • Button to start the cutting process after the record blank has been prepared and the display settings are complete.
  • The cutterhead is automatically raised (if it is not already raised).
  • The turntable then automatically moves to the start groove position.
  • The turntable heater is automatically activated as configured.
  • The stylus heater is automatically activated as configured.

TRACK MARKER Button

  • Button to temporarily increase the groove spacing. This allows the separation between the individual tracks to be visually identified after the cut is complete.
  • Can also be performed via MIDI.

FINISH Button

  • Button to initiate the lead-out groove. The lead-out groove is cut with a large groove spacing up to the end groove.
  • Automatic cutting of the end groove.
  • Automatic lifting of the cutterhead.
  • Automatic deactivation of the turntable heater, stylus heater, and exhaust (when using the SU9 exhaust system).
  • Automatic return of the temperature measuring arm to its home position.
  • Automatic return of the turntable to its home position.

ABORT Button

  • Button to abort a cutting process. All heating and movement functions are deactivated.
  • The cutting head is raised.
  • Record heating, stylus heating, and suction are deactivated.
  • Turntable carriage movement and turntable extension are stopped.
  • The display indicates the abort. Calibration and return of the carriage to its home position can be initiated via the display.

SELECT knob and button

  • The Select knob can be turned in increments to position the starting point for the cut with an accuracy of 1 mm.
  • Pressing the Select knob switches to a coarser 10 mm adjustment. Each increment then adjusts by 10 mm.
  • Pressing it again resets the adjustment range to 1 mm.

GAIN control

This adjusts the input signal to the correct recording volume.

BALANCE control

  • Used to change the volume balance between the left and right channels in the stereo signal.
  • Turn left – the right channel becomes quieter (to complete muting), while the left channel remains unchanged.
  • Turn right – the left channel becomes quieter, while the right channel remains unchanged.

dB LEFT and dB RIGHT VU meters

Large 65mm VU meters. These display the signal levels directly at the editing head. The meters are factory calibrated.

LED CALIBRATION

Indicates that the device is in the calibration phase.

LED CUT

Indicates that the device is in the cutting phase.

LED HEAD UP

Indicates that the cutterhead is in the raised position.

LED HEAD DOWN

Indicates that the cutterhead is in the lowered position.

LED HEAD SUC.

Indicates that the suction control is active (suction is running).

LED HEAD HEAT

Indicates that the stylus heater is active.

LED L PEAK

  • Left channel Peak:
  • Lights up briefly at peak levels: The signal is very loud, but not necessarily distorted.
  • Lights up continuously or red: The signal is too loud → clipping and audible distortion occurs.

LED R PEAK

  • Right channel Peak:
  • Lights up briefly at peak levels: The signal is very loud, but not necessarily distorted.
  • Lights up continuously or red: The signal is too loud → clipping and audible distortion occurs.

LED MIDI CONTROLLER – “C” Track Marker

Lights up when a “C” note is received from the MIDI input. Then the TRACK MARKER button is pressed internally.
The groove spacing is temporarily increased so that the separation between the individual tracks can be visually recognized after the cut is complete.

LED MIDI CONTROLLER – “E” Expand Groove

Lights up when an “E” note is received from the MIDI input. Then the Expand Groove is activated. As long as the signal is detected, the groove spacing is increased to 250µm.
Can be used to prevent an incoming, loud signal from causing an overcut or a pre-echo when the groove spacing is otherwise narrow. (Also known as the ECHO button.)

LED MIDI CONTROLLER – “F” Final Line

Lights up when an “F” note is received from the MIDI input. The FINISH button is then pressed internally, and the lead-out groove is initiated. The lead-out groove is cut with a large groove spacing up to the end groove.
All other automatic processes are the same as when the FINISH button is pressed (end groove, cutting head lift, heating, and suction deactivated, and then return to the starting position).

LED MIDI CONTROLLER – “A” Any

Lights up when an “A” note is received from the MIDI input. It has no function. When the “A” note is detected, a 5V signal is also output at the IO output for further use.

5 LEDs for status display

The system status can be determined according to the LED display.

TOUCH DISPLAY SETTINGS

Record speed

Basic setting options: 33⅓, 45, 78 rpm
Alternative expert setting options: Pitch speed adjustment in three ranges (+/-8%; +/-16% and +/-50%)
An estimated recording time is automatically calculated and displayed.

Record size (touchdown point)

Basic setting: 7″, 10″, 12″
Alternatively, expert setting: 120mm to 361mm (4.7″ to 14″), variably definable (in mm and inches).
The touchdown point can be precisely adjusted using the adjustment knob on the control panel (coarse or fine adjustment).
A maximum recording time is automatically calculated and displayed.

FIXED groove pitch

A constant groove pitch can be selected from 70µm to 250µm (363 to 101 lines/inch). (Displayed in µm and lines/inch).
A maximum recording time is automatically calculated and displayed.

VARIABLE groove pitch

If a pre-signal (approximately 0.9 seconds before the actual recording signal) is present and connected, the device can calculate the required groove pitch and automatically adjust it. This can extend the recording time by up to 40%.
A maximum groove pitch can also be set for the variable groove pitch.

Down Force Control

An automatic tracking pressure control with five levels can be activated upon request.

Stylus Heating control

The stylus heater can be set to various settings: Off, Low, Medium, and High.
The actual current consumption is measured and displayed in mA.
A 500mA fuse protects against overheating.

Record Heating control

A desired temperature (between 20°C and 46°C) can be set.
The heating via a heating lamp then operates automatically and is started at the beginning of the cut and stopped at the end of the cut (end groove).
A dedicated measuring arm pivots to the measuring position at the beginning (depending on the plate size) and returns to the starting position at the end of the cut.
The measuring arm has an infrared sensor for continuous temperature measurement.
The measuring arm has an OLED display. The target temperature and the measured temperature are displayed.
The temperature control is fully automatic by regulating (dimming) the heating lamp.

Suction control

The SU9 sucction system (if connected) can be controlled automatically via the display.
In addition to the “OFF” setting, there is also an “Automatic” setting. This automatically activates the extraction system when the cut starts and deactivates when the end groove is reached and the cutting head lifts off.
There is also a “30 Seconds” button. This activates the extraction system for 30 seconds, even when no cut is being made. This allows powder, for example, to be sucked through the suction system. (This reduces the adhesion of the cutting thread to the suction hose.)

Laser

The FP9 lathe has a built-in cross laser for easy calibration of the cutting head. This laser can also be activated for monitoring during cutting.
The laser is activated/deactivated via the touch display.

Status indicator

Various counters are displayed on the display for your convenience:
Number of cuts.
Number of aborts.
Operating hours.
Cutting hours.
Stylus cutting hours. This value can also be reset to zero (for example, when the stylus is replaced).

Feedback Compensation Amplifier

The FBCA can be deactivated. It should generally always be enabled, but for certain purposes it may be necessary. This also deactivates the IRIAA equalizer.

Overall

For a complete overview, there is a display showing all settings.
